Small and mighty, Amos the calf is beating odds

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

CANONSBURG, Pa. — It’s not uncommon for a calf to be born prematurely — especially when it’s a twin. But one Washington County calf has left its owner and veterinarian surprised after he was born eight weeks early and weighed less than 20 pounds. Holly Martin and her husband, Ed, of Canonsburg, have nursed

Nature truly provides the best fodder for stories

Thursday, June 21, 2012

The stiff stems of the mowed hay field were as brittle as the business end of a straw broom and each step produced an easily heard crunch. I was doing a clumsy crouch toward the crest of the slope and trying my best to stay as hidden as possible behind a well packed and neatly

It’s true: Father does know best

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Thursday, June 30, 2011

I’m not an avid angler. It’s probably because I’m so easily distracted. Dragonflies and damselflies patrol their territories along cattail-lined shorelines. Bullfrogs bellow from the shoreline, and there’s often at least one snapping turtle coming up for air or a water snake swimming toward me. Attention getter More often, however, it’s the machine gun-like rattle

Farmers not interested in rebuilding beef cattle herds

Friday, July 30, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The nation’s beef herd continues to decline. Due to several years of financial difficulty, producers have little interest in rebuilding their herds. As a result other animals are gaining a larger market share and the cost of beef will remain high, according to a Purdue University economist.

Global activity of pork and beef remains strong

Monday, June 15, 2009

DENVER — Despite the prolonged slowdown in global economic activity and the initial wave of A-H1N1 Influenza-related market reactions, exports of U.S. pork and beef held up reasonably well in the month of April.
