Columbiana-Mahoning dairymen among state’s top 5 percent

SALEM, Ohio — Four dairy farms in Columbiana and Mahoning counties achieved “elite” status as herds in the top 5 percent of farms on test with the statewide DHI Cooperative.
Smith Vale Farms, Lowmiller Farms, Doug and Marty Dye, and Grammer Jersey Farm each received DHI Elite awards during the Columbiana-Mahoning DHI annual meeting March 28 in Salem.

The Geauga County teen wanted to borrow $200 from his father to start a sweet corn enterprise, but before his dad would hand over the money, Kevin had to calculate his input and labor costs, create a sales plan and identify potential risks.

Expo explores the benefits of grazing

Shamrock Vale Farms in Kensington, Ohio, is one of the oldest and most successful grazing operations in the Buckeye State. Earl and Dan McKarns, a father-son team, raise about 150 registered Angus seedstock cow-calf pairs in a total forage system. On Aug. 19, the McKarns family opened the farm to nearly 300 visitors who wanted to learn more about raising grass-based cattle.

Logan Rohr, a farmer in Wooster, Ohio, founded Honeytown Meats to make his farm’s meat more accessible and keep some of it closer to home through online sales. The Rohr family also recently bought 3-D Meats, a custom processor and retail store in Dalton. Now, they’ve got the whole supply chain pretty much covered — from raising the livestock to sending the meat home with customers.
